Respiratory outbreak declared on the Inpatient Unit at WHGH
Date issued: December 6, 2025
West Haldimand General Hospital (WHGH) has declared an Influenza outbreak on the Inpatient Unit (IPU) after six patients developed respiratory symptoms.
Our team has put strong Infection Prevention and Control measures in place to reduce the spread of the virus. These measures include:
- Isolation of patients who have tested positive or developed symptoms. Patients who are ill or who may have been exposed are staying in their rooms to reduce the chance of transmission.
- Visitor restrictions. Visiting is limited on the Inpatient Unit to support the safety of patients, staff, and families. Essential Care Providers may continue to visit after speaking with the care team. Essential Care Providers should wear a mask when visiting.
- Contact tracing. Our team is identifying and notifying anyone who may have been exposed.
- Enhanced cleaning. We have increased cleaning and disinfection in the unit.
- Regular symptom checks. Patients on the Inpatient Unit are being closely monitored so they can receive care as soon as possible.
We also kindly ask all visitors or Essential Care Providers to stay home if they feel unwell. Staying home when sick helps protect patients and supports the safety of everyone on the unit.
We understand these changes may be difficult. We ask visitors to be patient and respectful as staff work to support a safe environment for everyone.
WHGH is acting quickly to manage the outbreak and reduce the risk to others. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
