Breast Cancer in Ontario

Breast cancer is the most common female cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women.  In 2009, it is estimated that 8,700 Ontario women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that 2,100 will die from the disease.

About the Ontario Breast Screening Program

The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) has been providing comprehensive, organized screening services to Ontario women age 50 and over since 1990.  The OBSP’s goal is to screen 70% of Ontario women aged 50-69 by 2010 and 90% by 2020.

Women who are screened at OBSP sites receive services that are accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists.  Women also receive the added value of participating in an organized program:  recruitment, results notification, automatic recall, coordinated follow-up and evaluation.  A doctor’s referral is not needed.  To make an appointment at the West Haldimand General Hospital – Ontario Breast Screening Program please call 905-768-3311 ext. 1116 between 8 AM – 4 PM, Monday thru Friday.

The OBSP provides high quality mammography.  The OBSP meets Canadian standards for the early detection of small invasive cancers.

Women eligible for OBSP:

  • Ontario residents 50 years of age and older
  • No acute breast symptoms
  • No personal history of breast cancer
  • No current breast implants
  • Have not had a mammogram within the last twelve months

To make an appointment at the West Haldimand General Hospital  for the Ontario Breast Screening Program  please call 905-768-3311 ext. 1116 between 8 AM – 4 PM, Monday thru Friday.
